Should kids walk a dog?

Roadie Pad & Pet does professional dog walking in Cape Town and the Atlantic Seaboard. Our dog walkers are all trained and supervised.

Many parents have discussed the question of children walking dogs. It does save you money or let the child learn how to earn money, but is it safe? Many factors need to be considered.

  1. Is the environment safe that the child is walking the dog in? We all know the traffic in Cape Town is getting out of hand. Even our neighborhood parks are not always safe for a child to be alone.
  2. Is the child mature enough to walk a dog alone? Can the child think on his or her feet should something happen?
  3. The physical ability of the child is also a very important factor. Can the child control the dog should the dog react to something while dog walking?
  4. Is the dog trained to listen to commands? Does the child know all the commands?

All this needs to be considered before you let your child walk with your dog. Many things happen, dogs are sometimes very unpredictable while they are in a strange environment. You never know how they will react to other dogs around, sudden loud noises, or other people. That is why we recommend trained staff, people who can control the dog and can assess a situation should something go wrong.
